Netflix is the world’s leading global internet TV service and is now amongst the leading producers and distributors of European entertainment of the highest quality. Since 2012, Netflix has contributed more than $1,75 billion dollars to European productions (license, original, and co-productions), an investment that is still growing and includes more than 90 original productions in different stages of development.

The original content – that spans from series, movies, documentaries, kid’s shows, and stand-up specials – including coming titles like Dark, Netflix’s first original series from Germany, a crime-thriller series from Italy called Suburra, and Las Chicas del Cable, a romantic drama series inspired by the 1920s from Spain. Currently, European content is watched by more than 93 million Netflix users across the world, Netflix writes in a press release on March 1st, 2017.

“Great storytelling knows no geographic bounds. After four years of original programming and filming in 18 countries, we know compelling stories can come from anywhere and no matter their origin, can resonate with audiences around the world. In fact, of the European shows available on Netflix last year, more than half of watchers came from outside of Europe, which is why we are confident our upcoming slate of international shows will be enjoyed by viewers in their home countries and beyond”, says content director, Ted Sarandos in the same press release.

According to MediaWatch, Apple announced that they are planning to launch a streaming service for movies and TV shows equivalent to Netflix and the competitor Amazon, with Amazon Prime Video. Apple wants to lead with a couple of original TV shows on the subscription service Apple Music and eventually wants to expand their experience to a “cultural platform”.

“There are a lot of projects. We are already moving. This is what Apple Music has to be. Apple Music will get video and other content that I can’t talk about. We will be aggressive” says the director of the service with Apple, Jimmy Iovine, to the New York Times.

Det bliver interessant at følge intensiteten på tv-tjeneste- og musikstreamingsmarkedet, særligt da det ser ud til, at markedet udvides og sammenblandes ved både Apples og YouTubes indtræden.

It will be interesting to follow the intensity on TV service and music streaming market, especially since it looks like the market is expanding and is consolidated by the entrance of Apple and Youtube.
